Helping seniors stay independent

Congregate Meal Program C-1

The C-1 Nutrition Congregate meal program attempts to address some of the needs of the active senior citizen. C-1 provides the opportunity for the senior citizen to receive a hot nutritionally balanced meal (provides 33 1/3% of  their daily nutritional needs) once a day, Monday through Friday. Delta Sigma Theta Life Development, Inc. has five sites where the congregate meals served.

The sites are:

  • Delta Sigma Theta Life Development, Inc.                     2528 West Boulevard
  • George and Helen Thomas Center                    2475 Washington Boulevard
  • Independent Square                                           2455 South St. Andrews Place
  • Seinan Center                                                   3116 West Jefferson Boulevard
  • Betty Hill Senior Center                                    3570 S. Denker Avenue

One of the most serious problems facing senior citizens is isolation. A large portion of our seniors have very little contact with family, friends or neighbors. There are many reasons for this isolation  … some seniors have outlived their spouse and children, some  have been abandoned by family or relatives and some may have no relatives in the area.

The C-1 program can help seniors overcome being isolated because of the design of the program. In our center, seniors sit at round tables which encourage interaction between the seniors. The staff also interacts and visits with clients during the time the meal is being served. There are also people representing different areas of interest who come to make presentations during the lunch hour.

C-1 Nutrition staff include:

  • Perry Burge-                Coordinator
  • Wanda Fritz –              Delta site
  • Gloria Craig-                Betty Hill site
  • Reiko Kayamo-            Seinan site
  • Angela Bastillo-            Thomas site
  • Amy Bayliss-                Independent Square

The seniors who attend the center have an initial intake form filled out which allows us to report the number of meals served to our Funder. The senior receives a picture identification card which is then scanned for our records.
